Technical Carryout of Tranquilized Black Bear

May 1, 2005
Yosemite Valley

A human-food-habituated bear was shot with a tranquilizer dart by park biologists in Yosemite Valley. Before it became sedated, the bear ran into a large boulder field. YOSAR was paged out for a bear rescue. In these photos, rescuers prepare the sedated bear for the carryout.  The bear was strapped into a wheeled litter just as a human patient would be.  Note the yellow tag in the bear's left ear. The bear's face was covered with a green beanie to protect its identity.
